The Aardvark Jazztet (a six-piece ensemble drawn from the legendary Aardvark Jazz Orchestra, Mark Harvey, Music Director) presentedThrough the Jazz Decades, an exhilarating tour from New Orleans to the Great American Songbook, from Miles Davis to Mark Harvey.  The show included the New Orleans staple Down by the Riverside,  the Miles Davis modal masterpiece All Blues, and Mark Harvey's original compositions (“captivating, highly recommended” -Jazz Improv), plus favorites by George Gershwin, Fats Waller, Duke Ellington and more.  Dr. Harvey, who teaches jazz history at MIT and lectures widely on American music, was the tour guide through this panoramic jazz soundscape.

Aardvark continued its historic 41st season with a show at the Nave Music Series, Clarendon Hill Presbyterian Church, 155 Powderhouse Boulevard, Somerville, MA 02144.  The band performed the world premiere of director Mark Harvey’s Mo-Joe, in honor of Somerville Mayor Joseph Curtatone.  
 
Also performed:  Harvey’s 2014 composition Spaceways, celebrating the Sun Ra Centennial, and another Harvey original Dreaming, featuring vocalist Grace Hughes, plus the world premiere of The Deep by John Funkhouser, Aardvark’s stellar pianist and bassist.    Rounding out the show:  rarely heard selections from the Ellington/Strayhorn Far East Suite:   the exotic Mount Harissa and the raucous Blue Pepper.  
 
The June 28 show was the closing act of Joe’s Jazz and Blues Festival.  Founded in 2009, the festival was the brainchild of Mayor Curtatone, a jazz enthusiast and well-known supporter of the arts. 

 
Aardvark's "No Walls" Named Official Song of Jazz Week
 Jazz Week has declared Mark Harvey's composition "No Walls, " the official song of Jazz  Week. And the music has inspired the theme for the week, April 25 through May 4  "No Walls: A Salute to the Power of Jazz to Bring People Together," especially significant in this season commemorating the first Boston Marathon since last year's tragedy. Read the Globe article.

JazzTimes: Aardvark honoring Marathon bombing victims & heroes
 The Aardvark Jazz Orchestra, one of the longest running large jazz ensembles in the world, continues its historic 41st season with a concert of music by founder and music director Mark Harvey on Saturday April 26, 2014 at 8:00 pm at MIT’s Kresge Auditorium. The centerpiece will be the world premiere of Harvey’s Commemoration (Boston 2013), a tribute to the victims and survivors of the Boston Marathon tragedy. No Walls, a staple of the Aardvark repertory, will be offered in a spirit of unity and healing. No Walls has been selected as the official song for JazzBoston’s Jazz Week (April 21-30, 2014). Also on tap: another Mark Harvey premiere, Spaceways,a celebration of Sun Ra in his centennial year. Sat. 4/26: Commemoration (Boston 2013)
The Aardvark Jazz Orchestra presents a very special concert on Saturday, April 26, at MIT’s Kresge Auditorium, Cambridge, MA, at 8 PM, free admission.  All compositions by music director Mark Harvey.  

The world premiere of “Commemoration (Boston 2013),” inspired by last year’s Marathon tragedy will pay homage to the victims and survivors of that event. 
 
“No Walls,” a bulwark of the Aardvark repertory, will be offered in a spirit of unity and healing, as well as serving as the official song for Boston’s Jazz Week (April 21 – 30). The program will also include  another premiere, “Spaceways,” a tribute to Sun Ra in observance of his centennial.

This concert is presented by MIT Music and Theater Arts, in conjunction with JazzBoston’s Jazz Week and the Smithsonian Institution’s observance of April as National Jazz Appreciation Month.
